Intercultural Competence

Building Internationally Educated Nurses’ Intercultural Competence through Technologically Enhanced Learning

This research project targets internationally educated nursing IEN students and faculty in the York University BScN program. Technology enhanced learning is integrated into the curriculum to address IEN intercultural communication challenges. The main objective of our project is to increase client, interprofessional, and intraprofessional intercultural competence (ICC) in IENs.

This project utilizes the entry level competencies (College of Nurses, 2009) and mobile technology to augment IEN knowledge, skills, and judgment for ICC. An Advisory Committee has developed realistic ICC vignettes which are digitally-recorded for mobile learning. Students practice, demonstrate, and record ICC vignettes that are podcasted to a personal e-portfolio for review and reflection. Students demonstrate knowledge, skills and judgment for entry to practice ICC competence through Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). This model has potential for translation to Canadian IEN nursing and international healthcare programs teaching ICC with or without technology-enhanced learning.
